AI Research Scientist – Legal AI & Multimodal NLP
This role is based on-site in Tokyo, Japan and will be working directly with Fred Almeida.

We are seeking an AI Research Scientist specializing in Legal NLP & Multimodal AI to drive innovation in contract analysis, legal decision-making, and AI-powered case assessment.The Role:
As an AI Research Scientist at MiAI Law, you will:- Develop and fine-tune domain-specific LLMs for legal document analysis.
- Implement multimodal AI systems, integrating NLP with vision-based document intelligence.
- Conduct research on AI reasoning, fact validation, and uncertainty quantification for legal AI.
- Optimize knowledge extraction & retrieval pipelines to enhance legal search and decision automation.
- Collaborate with AI engineers, legal professionals, and backend teams to integrate models into production.
Key Responsibilities
Legal NLP Model Development- Fine-tune LLMs (e.g., GPT, Longformer) for contract analysis, clause classification, and legal reasoning.
- Implement Legal-adapted Transformer models for improved text understanding.
- Explore semantic retrieval methods for legal precedents and case law.
- Integrate Vision Transformers (Florence-2, ViT) for scanned contract analysis.
- Develop OCR-enhanced NLP pipelines for multi-format legal text processing.
- Leverage table detection, signature verification, and document layout analysis to improve legal workflows.
- Conduct AI-driven legal risk assessment research.
- Implement uncertainty quantification techniques (Bayesian inference, Monte Carlo dropout) to assess AI reliability.
- Publish research findings and contribute to open-source legal AI projects.
Requirements: Who You Are
Technical Skills:- PhD/MSc in AI, NLP, Machine Learning, or related fields.
- Strong experience with Hugging Face Transformers, PyTorch, TensorFlow, LangChain.
- Proficiency in document intelligence, semantic search, and knowledge graphs.
- Prior experience in fine-tuning transformer models for domain adaptation.
- Strong background in legal AI research, case law analysis, or NLP for regulations & contracts.
- Passion for advancing AI in the legal sector.
- Ability to work collaboratively with AI engineers, lawyers, and backend teams.
- Strong research mindset with the ability to translate state-of-the-art AI techniques into production models.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills to explain AI-driven legal insights.
